Denver upsets the Dallas Cowboys in a thriller that came down to the final seconds and final play of the game.

Going into their game with the Dallas Cowboys there  were a lot of people that did not think much of the Denver Broncos. They talked about how they had to have a miracle against Cincinnati and how they beat two bad teams in the Cleveland Browns and Oakland Raiders. But what do those people say now?

The Broncos beat the Cowboys with excellent defense and just enough offense while showing the football world they can play well against quality teams. Denver had every chance to cave in but when the going got tough the Denver defense got tougher and the Broncos offense made the plays it needed to make.

How did Denver beat the Cowboys? First of all they used terrific defense, especially in the second half. Dallas was unable to get anything going on offense in the second half. Denver pressured Tony Romo and held the powerful Dallas running game in check.

The play of the game for the Broncos came with 1:50 to go in the fourth quarter when Orton hit Brandon Marshall down the right sideline. Marshall made a nice catch over the Dallas defender than made a beautiful run, zigzagging through the Cowboys into the end zone with the Bronco fans going crazy.

But the game was not over. Dallas moved the ball deep into Denver territory with just seconds remaining. On two consecutive slants routes into the end zone Champ Bailey had the Dallas reciever covered tightly and the Cowboys could not get the TD.

What happens now for the Broncos? Well things continue to get tougher. Denver plays the Patriots next week and will face an even tougher challenge. One advantage the Broncos might have is that head coach Josh McDaniels knows the Patriots about as well as anyone.

What this Bronco victory showed is that the Broncos can beat a good solid team. Their defense is legitimate and their offense does just enough to win. If the Denver offense can become more explosive the Broncos have a chance to be a very good team.

Bronco players to use on your fantasy team.

Let’s face it, the Denver Broncos have not exactly been on fire offensively, so having a Bronco offensive player on your team is probably not the best thing you could have done so far this year.

But defenses are part of fantasy football so the Denver defense has been a good defense to have this year. They don’t allow many points to be scored and they create turnovers and get plenty of sacks…all good things for a fantasy defense.

The special teams have not done much as far as kickoff and return TD’s but Denver’s defense is still a unit worth having on your fantasy team, even against the Cowboys.

Denver Bronco fantasy players we like today:

There are not going to be many but we will give you our thoughts.

1. Knowhon Moreno- If you do not have this player on your team and he is available in your league….get him now. This guy is going to be the main guy for the Broncos and he looks like he could be a star. He splits a lot of carries with Buckhalter but he still has the ability to put up good numbers.

2. Correll Buckhalter-Buckhalter has been terrific this year and as long as he stays healthy he is a solid number three type of back. He will split carries with Moreno but still has a decent shot  of putting up good numbers.

3. Brandon Marshall- Marshall is due for a breakout game. He is learning the offense and seems to be healthy. The problem with starting Marshall as of now is the Denver passing attack has been really conservative…but we expect that to change. Marshall would be a decent third receiver for you today against Dallas.

That is about it for Denver fantasy players today. Of cousre we talked about the Denver defense and they might be a good choice today. However, they play a talented Cowboy offense that when clicking can score a lot of points against anyone. Still, it is hard NOT to use a unit that is allowing only 5.3 points a game, gets plenty of sacks, and gets plenty of turnovers.

Five really good games, at least on paper, in the fourth week of the NFL season.

During the course of most NFL weeks there might be two or three really interesting games but this week, week four of the 2009 season, has five games that are really interesting with ONE game being an almost must see game.

Which game is that? We will give you a hint…Favre.!

Before we get to that game let’s take a look at the other four games this weekend that have above average viewing interest.

Dallas at Denver

The Cowboys are considered by many to be America’s team and rightfully so. It seems like any time they are on national TV the ratings go up and this year is no different. The Cowboys are always interesting, not only because of the talent they have but because of their owner and the drama that seems to follow this team. There has not been much drama in Big D so far this year and that is probably a good thing for the Cowboys and their fans.

However, Dallas has not played well this year despite being 2-1. They beat a bad Tampa Bay team, lost at home to the Giants, and struggled to beat a weak Carolina team. Dallas is led by the talented but mistake prone Tony Romo and a run game that leads the NFL through three weeks.

Denver has been a MAJOR surprise. They are 3-0 with two of the wins coming against bad teams (Cleveland and Oakland) and the other win coming against a solid Cincy team….although it took a miracle for Denver to win that game.

Denver’s defense has been outstanding this year but gets a major test against Dallas. Is Dallas a top notch Super Bowl contender or merely a good solid team? Are the Broncos for real? Can they beat a quality team and continue to play good defense? This game will show us.

Baltimore at New England

The Patriots have their work cut out for them in this game. Although they are 2-1 the Patriots have not been the typical Patriots. Tom Brady has not played really well and the Patriot defense has shown some holes.

The Ravens have been lights out so far this year. They have had a really good defense for a long time but now they have a strong offense. This game has so many angles. Can Brady handle the heat the Ravens are sure to throw at him? Can Flaaco handle the defense the Patriots are sure to try to confuse him with? Are the Ravens really as good as they look? Is Brady the same QB  he was a couple of years ago. This game is going to answer some of those questions.

NY Jets at New Orleans

This is the game where we think the Jets will prove themselves to be for real or just pretenders. The Jets have played exceptionally well this year and if they can go into New Orleans and beat a solid Saints team we think the Jets will have proven themselves for real.

Mark Sanchez has been GREAT for the Jets so far this year but the best QB on the field will be Drew Brees. Brees has been phenomenal but will get a stearn test from the Jets defense this week. The Jets attack on defense from every angle you can imagine and it will be interesting to see if the Saint offense can handle a really physical Jet defense.

New Orleans has some issues on defense and now we will see if the young Sanchez can go into a hostile environment and lead his team to victory.

San Diego at Pittsburgh

These are two very good football teams, although you would not know it by Pittsburgh’s record. The Steelers are 1-2 and even in their win did not look really good. The Steelers and Chargers played twice last year with the Chargers winning the regular season matchup in Pittsburgh and the Steelers winning the playoff matchup.

These teams seem to be developing a really good rivalry and it will be interesting to see if the Steelers can get their offense untracked. They have not run the ball well at all this year and they have not had enough big plays in the passing game.

The Chargers are chasing the Denver Broncos in the AFC West and have the very talened Philip Rivers as their QB. Rivers might be the most underrated player in the NFL. Last year he led the league in passing and did not go to the Pro Bowl. How does that happen? Rivers and the Chargers seem to make big play after big play in the passing game and they are going to need that this week.

The Charges defense has not been dominant but they are good enough to slow the Steeler offense down. Now the question is can the Charger offense do enough against the Steeler defense to get the win in Pittsburgh. The Steelers are not in desperation mode, but going 1-3 to start the season would put them in a huge hole.

And now the game EVERYONE will be talking about!

When Brett Favre decided to come back and play with the Vikings everyone associated with televising a Minnesota game was really happy…but none could have been happier than the ESPN crew. You just know they will be yapping about this game for hours and hours and hours before game time….and rightfully so. This game has so much intrigue…not as much as when Favre goes back to Green Bay…but close.

Both of these teams are good. The Vikings might be really good. And the Packers are solid. Both teams are in the same division so besides having the Favre deal going this is an important game from a standings perspective.

Farve is where he wanted to be and the Vikings are benefitting tremendously from that. No matter what you say about Favre he wins football games with plays that will make your head spin. Not many QB’s would have made the throw that won the game last week.

The Packers are really happy with Rodgers and they should be. He has established himself as a top QB and is one of the best young QB’s in the league. The relationship between Favre and Rodges has not always been good so this angle by itself is interesting.

You just know the Packers want to put the hurt on Farve and the Vikings in the worse way. Farve did not leave the Packers under good terms  and there are plenty of people in Green Bay that would like to see the Packers rough him up.

The Vikings need Favre to stay healthy. If the Vikings can keep Favre healthy they are a really good team that has a chance to go deep into the playoffs. This game has it all. Revenge. Pupil versus teacher. Divisional rival. National TV.

It is the game of the week…at least on paper.

Dallas versus Denver: How the Broncos win this game.

Both the Dallas Cowboys and the Denver Broncos have a lot to prove in the fourth game of the 2009 NFL season.

Dallas is 2-1 with two wins against mediocre to really bad teams. They lost to their arch rival the NY Giants on a last second FG at home in the second week of the season.

The Denver Broncos are 3-0 with two wins against really bad teams, the Raiders and the Browns, and a miracle win over the Bengals…who appear to be a fairly solid team.

So how do the Broncos beat the Cowboys?

Denver is 3-0 but really have played a very soft schedule. The Dallas Cowboys will be their biggest test so far this year for a couple of reasons. Here is how we think the Broncos can beat the Cowboys as three point home dogs.

  • Denver MUST stop the Dallas running game. The Cowboys have the best running game so far in the NFL this year and they are capable of dominating any team with their running game. If Denver cannot stop the run they have no chance to win this game.

The Cowboys have a huge offensive line so the Broncos are going to have to play fast and physical. If they allow the huge Cowboy offensive line to push them around they are done. So Denver MUST stop the Cowboy running game. As of this writing Marion Barber will play but Felix Jones will not.

  • Denver must put pressure on Tony Romo. Romo has a lot of talent but also has the ability to make a lot of mistakes when under pressure. The Broncos have been really good at pressuring the QB so far this year and that will have to continue in this game. The Cowboys appear to miss T.O. in the passing game but still have enough firepower with Roy Williams, Patrick Clayton, and Jason Witten to cause Denver a lot of problems…unless Denver can put a lot of heat on Romo.
  • Denver MUST run the football. Let’s face it…the Broncos are not real good on offense…at least not in the passing game. It is quite apparent that head coach Josh McDaniels doesn’t want to put the game in the hands of Kyle Orton. Orton is a manager of games, not a QB that can consistently carry a team on his back. If Denver cannot run the ball they are in big trouble.
  • Kyle Orton MUST make some big plays in the passing game. The Broncos will not be able to run the ball if the Cowboys don’t respect the pass, so Orton has to make a few plays in the passing game. If he does the Broncos have a chance to make some hay against a mediocre Cowboy defense. Don’t expect Orton to go crazy against the Cowboys but he does need to make some plays to open things up a bit.
  • The Denver defense needs to create turnovers. So far this year the Broncos have been really good at creating turnovers and in this game they will need to get some more. If the Broncos lose the turnover game they are almost assured of losing…like most teams are. Since Denver is not explosive on offense as of now, the more chances they have to score the better for them.

In conclusion

This is big game for both teams but particulary the Broncos. How good are the Broncos? It is hard to say. They beat two really bad teams and it took a miracle play for them to win the other game. But the fact remains they are 3-0 with a defense only allowing 5.3 points a game. A win over the Cowboys would be confirmation that they are better than most everyone thinks and that their 3-0 record is legit.

It is going to be tough for Denver to beat a team that has a talent advantage at most positions. But this Bronco team is well coached and play a tough physical brand of football. If the Broncos can create some turnovers they have a solid chance of winning.

The Cowboys visit the 3-0 Broncos on Sunday with the Cowboys being three point road favorites. Denver gets its first real test to see if they are a legitimate playoff contender.

When the Broncos first saw this game against the Cowboys on their schedule there probably were not too many Bronco players that thought they would be 3-0  going into this game…but that is where they are thanks to a miracle finish against Cincinnati and a very stingy defense.

This game against the Cowboys is going to show a lot about how good the Broncos really are. The Cowboys, while they have not played really well this year, are the toughest test to date for the Broncos.

So let’s take a closer look at this game.

On offense the Cowboys have the definite advantage. Although Tony Romo has not played well this year it is reasonable to think the Cowboys have the advantage at the QB position. Kyle Orton actually has a higher QB rating than Romo but that is with Orton playing very conservatively and not taking many chances. How long the Broncos can keep playing this way and winning is hard to say….but at some point Orton will have to actually carry the Broncos offense instead of just managing it. Advantage Romo.

The Cowboys running game has been a bit hit or miss so far this year while the Broncos running game has been strong and seems to be getting better. As of this writing it is still up in the air if Marion Barber is going to play, if he doesn’t that takes a lot away from the Cowboy ground game

The Broncos have had great success running the ball with Buchhalter and Knowshon Moreno carrying the load. It will not be long before Moreno becomes the star of the Bronco backfield. The Broncos offensive line has been opening the holes and the backs have been taking advantage of them. Advantage Denver in the run game.

As far as the receiving game goes this is a bit of a toss up. The Cowboys have quality receivers but so do the Broncos. The Cowboys seem to miss Terrel Owens while the Broncos seem to miss a completely healthy and productive Brandon Marshall. Both receiving corps are capable of the big play and of course the main weapon in the Cowboy passing game is Jason Witten. The Broncos do not have the type of passing game that can take advantage of their receivers, mainly because of Orton, slight advantage to Dallas.

On defense the Broncos have been sensational to date, but not exactly against the top offensive teams. The Bengals are a solid offensive team but the Browns and Raiders are awful. The Broncos defense will get a stiff test on Sunday against the Cowboys.

The Cowboys have had trouble getting turnovers while the Broncos have been terrific at creating turnovers. The Cowboys have also had trouble getting to the QB while Denver has had no trouble at all creating havoc on opposing QB’s.

Denver has the advantage in the LB’ing corps while Dallas has the advantage up front. In the secondary we will give the advantage to the Broncos, although not by much.

On special teams both these teams are solid but not spectacular. Matt Prater has done a great job on kickoffs but been a bit inconsistent on FG’s. We will call this a draw.

So who do we think will win the game? We are going to take the Cowboys by a TD. Why? Because the Cowboys have an offense the Broncos have yet to see and Denver just does not have enough firepower on offense to keep up with the Cowboys. For Denver to win this game their defense is going to have to create turnovers and Orton and the offense are going to have to come up with big plays. We do not think the Denver offense has the firepower to keep up with a pretty good Dallas offense.

WE like the Carolina Panthers +9.5 over the Dallas Cowboys in the fourth Monday Night game of the year.

The Dallas Cowboys face a early critical test tonight against the Carolina Panthers. The Cowboys have not looked real sharp in the first two game of the year. They beat the awful Tampa Bay Bucs in the season opener, then lost a close game on a last second FG by the NY Giants.

The Panthers were destroyed on opening day by the Eagles and then came back last week to play a more respectable game against the Falcons.

We like the Panthers tonight because of one main reason: the Cowboys defense has been very mediocre and we think the Panthers have enough offense to keep this game within a TD. Dallas doesn’t have a sack so far this year and the one thing that you need to do against the Panthers is to pressure Jake Delhomme. If you can do that you have a good chance to get turnovers.

We think the Panthers will run the ball against the Cowboys and make enough plays in the passing game to keep this game close.

Panthers +9.5 over Dallas

Denver beats the Raiders to move to 3-0 and becomes a surprise team in the NFL 2009 season.

Does anyone reading this story really believe they thought the Broncos would be 3-0 to start this season? Well they are and they are doing it with DEFENSE!

The Broncos had one of the worst defenses in the NFL last season but through three games that defense (with mostly the same players) has given up only 16 total points! Yes, you read that right…only 16 total points in three games!

What is the difference with these Broncos? Well on defense they are solely playing the 3-4 and are a much more physical defense. They fly to the ball, they are creating pressure on the QB, and they are getting turnovers. Ya, we know…they haven’t played a tough schedule yet but it really doesn’t matter….they still have only given up 16 points this year…a paltry 5.3 a game!

On offense they are not flashy. They are steady. The Broncos, as usual, run the ball well and do just enough in the passing game to put points on the board. It is pretty obvious that eventually the passing game is going to need to be more productive. Kyle Orton has not thrown an interception so far this year, but he also hasn’t gotten the passing game into high gear. He continues to miss open receivers and except for the miracle against the Bengals the Broncos have not made many big plays.

The Broncos special teams have been ok, nothing great but nothing real bad. The coaching has been outstanding, especially on defense. Mike Nolan has so far made all the right calls with the Broncos D. On offense head coach Josh McDaniels has realized what he has in Kyle Orton and doesn’t ask Orton to do too much.

Can the Broncos make a serious playoff run? It is far to early to tell but one main concern for the Broncos is their upcoming schedule. It is brutal. Absolutely brutal for the next eight games and it starts in game four with the Dallas Cowboys. If the Broncos can split the next eight they will be 7-4 and probably in contention for the AFC West title and a wild card spot.

So far the Broncos have been the surprise team in the NFL and if they stay healthy they should get better. But teams will start taking a harder look at Denver and not be overlooking them. We think Denver now has a chance to realistically win eight games. But more wins might be possible. The schedule gets so tough. Things will be interesting.

The Denver Broncos are 2-0 and travel to Oakland today to take on the hated Raiders. Can the Broncos make it 3-0? It would be very surprising to see the Broncos lose to the Raiders but then again, it is surprising to see that the Broncos are 2-0.

Denver was impressive last week against a bad Cleveland team and won on opening weekend in a miracle finish against the Bengals.

The Raiders 1-1 and coming off a rather pathetic win against the Kansas City Chiefs. The Raiders biggest problem at this point with the Raiders is their QB position. Jamarcus Russell simply has been terrible in their first two games.

So how do we see this game being played out? As we mentioned earlier we see the Broncos winning this game and possibly winning easy, but the Broncos will need to play better offensively to score an impressive win against the Raiders.

Denver should be able to move the ball against the Raiders while the Bronco defense should be able to control the anemic Raider offense. We look for Kyle Orton to play better this week and put up some decent numbers. One guy the Broncos need to get going is their number one draft pick Knowshon Moreno. He has not been much of a factor in the first two games and the Broncos could really use him in the running game.

The other guy the Broncos need to get going is Brandon Marshall. Marshall has been almost invisable the first two games but should be healthy and have a better understanding of the McDaniel playbook.

We see a Broncos win 27-13.
